When developing ecolabel criteria (standarts for products), the focus is on the stages where the product has the highest environmental impact, and this differs from product to product. Taking a look at textiles, for instance, fabrics have strong environmental impacts when they are dyed, printed and bleached. An example of this would be the EcoLogo, managed by TerraChoice Marketing. Definition "Ecolabelling" is a voluntary method of environmental performance certification and labelling that is practised around the world. An ecolabel identifies products or services proven environmentally preferable overall, within a specific product or service category. Ecolabels generally rely on life-cycle assessment to determine the environmental impact of a product ‘from cradle to grave’. Usually claims appearing on a product must be preceded by a chain of custody exercise that documents that the product was derived from, for example, a fishery certified as being ‘sustainably managed’. Other eco labels are mandatory: for example, in North America, manufacturers of cars and major household appliances are obliged to label their products to show how energy efficient they are; in Europe, makers of major electrical appliances also have to display a label containing an A–G rating (A is good, G is bad) showing its level of energy efficiency. Inconsistencies in ecolabelling are exacerbated by brands unwilling to disclose production practices for fear of scrutiny, even if progress is being made. A brand working to fix its supply chain may be unfairly shunned by consumers for not having fully transformed it.
